Ok so I just tested positive for COVID-19

I figure I break the news from now.

I was feeling sick for most of the week. I spoke to my doctor Friday morning and he asked me to come in to be tested. I got the test this morning and it came back positive.

Time for some Q&A ^_^

Q. What was getting tested like?
A. Very quick. The doctor swabbed the back of my throat. Only took a moment to get a culture. It was uncomfortable for me but not because of the process itself. I get muscle cramps in my jaw and neck when I open my mouth really wide. Had I known, I would have done it in advance.

Q. How long will you be self-quarantined?
A. My doctor said I likely had it for at least a week prior to being tested. So, I was told to self-quarantine for another 7 days while my family must self-quarantine for 14 days. I plan to self-quarantine for 14 days personally to be safe though.

Q. How did you get it or how do you think you got it?
A. My mother and I both believe I got it from another member of the household who was sick the week before. My doctor said it’s likely everyone else in the house is COVID-19 Positive though as of right now, I am the only one who got tested and had it confirmed.

Q. How will you handle daily needs?
A. I live in a house with 3 bathrooms. I will use one and my other family members will use the others. As for food, I have a mini fridge. A family member will bring meals to my bedroom door for me. I also have my medications in my room already.

Q. How are you feeling now?
A. A lot better than I did two days ago physically. I had trouble breathing most of Thursday starting in the afternoon, Things got so bad, I had to go to a pharmacy to get a new rescue inhaler since I have asthma. That helped get me through the night. It’s what led to me getting tested Friday.

…Ok, I think that covers everything worth talking about for now. I plan to provide updates over on my main blog regarding my health so free free to subscibe to it if you haven’t already.

I do not anticipate my updates to this blog will be severely impacted.

Anime updates for Attack on Titan, Black Clover and The Rising of the Shield Hero

…The 6 month wait was worth it. I’ll just put it like that.

A few weeks after Historia Reiss–introduced as Krista Lenz–assumed her true indentity and is is crowned Queen, the reformed Scout Regiment finally returns to Shiganshina District to find out what secrets Erin’s father has kept stashed in the basement of the Yaeger family home. The Beast Titan, who recruited The Armored Titan (Reiner) and the Colossal Titan (Bertoldt) makes his move. As both sides clash, the prizes are two: Erin Yaeger and whatever vital secrets his father kept in the basement of their home.

Just like the first Season, there is a high human body count.

Hange’s Squad and Armin’s Squad–yes, Armin is given command of soldiers–clash with Reiner and Bertoldt in their Titan forms. Reiner is taken down thanks to the Thunder Spears developed specifically to pierce his Titan form’s armored hide. Seeing Reiner fall, Bertoldt transforms and wipes out Hange’s Squad save Hange herself. Armin sacrifices himself to buy Eren the time he needs to deal the decisive blow.

Meanwhile, The Beast Titan wipes out The Scout Regiment with volleys of boulders. Commander Erwin sacrifices himself and the remnants of The Regiment to buy Levi time to take down the Beast Titan. he succeeds in forcing out The Beast Titan’s true form but is unable to finish the job. It’s revealed in this week’s episode Commander Ervin brought a vial of Titan Serum and left it to Levi to decide who to use it on. Everyone knew almost everyone would likely be killed so the plan was for the titan serum to be used on a soldier close to death. That soldier would then eat Reiner or Bertoldt to gain their Titan form.

Image result for Attack on Titan Commander Erwin and Armin

Levi arrives after Eren recovers Bertoldt and Armin’s bodies. Armin is barely alive and Eren urges him to use the Titan Serum to save his life. He’s about to inject Armin when another soldier brings Commander Erwin–who’s barely alive–to be revived. Levi makes the call to use it on Erwin despite Eren and Mikasa’s protests. Before he can, Erwin knocks his hand away as if to reject the chance to live again. Levi, who knows the commander better than anyone decides to honor the unspoken request and uses the Titan Serum on Armin. Erwin dies shortly afterward.

In the previous episode, Commander Erwin bet everything on Levi getting the job done. He literally led most of the regiment to their deaths to buy Levi time to turn the situation around. Levi didn’t finish the job but now the surviving soldiers firmly hold the advantage for now. They still have Eren, Armin now has the Colossal Titan’s powers and in the next episode, we’ll find out what secrets Eren’s father has in their basement.

Next week’s episode is a much watch!

…Whew.

Did you know this Anime was originally going to be only 48 episodes?

The Royal Knights Exam Arc wrapped three weeks ago. On next week’s episode, we will find out who made the cut for the Royal Knights Squad. This special squad made up of Magic Knights for all 9 existing Squads will take the fight to The Eye of the Midnight Sun. It goes without saying Asta and Yuno both made the cut. We’ll have to wait and see for everyone else.

This week’s episode and last week’s episode reveals the interesting backstory of how Yami and William Vangeance first became friendly rivals. They were originally squadmates. Yami wraps up this story from presumably a few years back with the two being named captains by The Wizard King after completing an important mission. Vangeance founds the Golden Dawn while Yami founds the Black Bulls.

Julius Novachrono is doing much to bridge the divide between Commoners, Nobles and Royals within the Magic Knights. Asta and Yuno came from nothing and are considered key assets in their respective squads. The next Arc is sure to be interesting.

For the first time since the first episode, the Four Heroes stood together.

Naofumi finally worked things out with the other Heroes, had his name cleared and his reputation restored thanks to the Queen of Meldromarc personally getting involved. Naofumi may have made up with the other threee Heroes but he sill plans to do his own thing. The difference is now he’s no longer a marked man and can freely travel the country.

When you think of everything this man went through since being teleported there, it’s been a long time coming.

The latest episode of The Rising of the Shield Hero reminds many why Raphtalia is considered “Best Girl”

Image result for The Rising of the Shield Hero Raphtalia

…I damn-near cried during Rahptalia’s flashbacks in her title episode this week. Not just because it reminded me of my own emotional trauma but because of the outstanding storytelling.

For those who you who may not be following The Rising of The Shield Hero too closely, she is first introduced early on in the series. After Naofumi is screwed over by the King of Melromarc for the first time, he meets the Demihuman Raphtalia and buys her from a Slave Merchant. Since she’s a Demihuman, Raphtalia matures and grows quickly–I mean literally. She has the body of a young woman the third episode after she’s introduced to give you an idea. Bits of her past is revealed but it’s shoved aside to focus on the main plot and other things. When the King of Melromarc conspires to force Naofumi and Raphtalia apart, The Shield Hero falls into despair. That’s when Raphtalia lets him know she will stay with him no matter what even if the world conspires against them.

Fast forward to last week’s episode. With the crown princess Melty now with them, the group decides to go see the Queen. Along the way, their pursuers catch up to them and Ralphtalia comes face to face with Idol, the man who brutally tortured her and her friends not that long ago. Overcome with rage and anger–and rightfully so–she draws her sword, intending to put him down. Naofumi, Melty and Filo manage to talk her out of it. A short time later, Raphtalia leads the group into the dungeon where her former tormentor kept Demihumans locked away beneath his mansion. You know things were about to get super emotional when her PTSD started to kick in.

The group does find a few Demihumans still alive and frees them, one of which Raphtalia recognizes from her village. The childhood friend named Rifana that she shared a cell with before she was bought by the Slave Merchant was very sick the last time they saw each other. Rushing to the cell, she is overcome with grief to see only Rifana’s remains. If not for the friends she made since leaving, the pain and deespair she started to feel from Survivor’s Guilt–that’s a real thing by the way–probably would’ve broken her.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this–by the way, these images are from an earlier episode.

She may have the body of a full grown woman but her maturity level is still that of a child or teenager in some regards. Technically, she’s over 18 now and not just because of the RPG mechanics. She ages faster simply being a Demihuman. She does crush on Naofumi but is smart enough to keep her feelings to herself…for now. Several episodes later, she learned Filo isn’t a love rival after all though they do compete for his affection. She has resolved to get him to see her as a woman though.

Before I forget. Naofumi can’t use any weapons other than the Shield because he is The Shield Hero. Because of this, he needed someone to form a party with who can fight. After being screwed over by the royal family for the first time, Naofumi meets the Slave Merchant. We now know the tme between when she was in the dungeon and met Naofumi probably wasn’t that long since she got sick while she was in the dungeon. Naofumi buys Raphtalia, gives her medicine and starts training her to fight. After the second incident involving the royal family, Naofumi buys a monster Egg and Filo is born not long afterward.

While it is true Raphtalia and Filo both have a Slave Crest, he’s only invoked it once with each of them. He used Raphtalia’s once when she was still a child while training her to fight and once with Filo because the group was being chased and they couldn’t find her otherwise. It definitely was a real head-scratcher when Raphtalia asked to have her Slave Crest re-applied after it was removed. That’s love for you I guess.

I just finished binge-watching The Promised Neverland on Crunchyroll

…Whew.

Toonami picked a GOOD one to carry the English Dub of. More so given there WILL be a Season 2 ^_^

There is so much going on in every episode, you really have to pay attention. Here’s information on 5 key characters and and a 6th who may be an important character if there is a time skip in the second season:

  • Emma: One of the 3 main protagonists. She and Norman stumble upon the truth about the world they know: The children are all actually food for demons. Together with Norman and Ray, they plan their escape from the Home while also trying to outwit their “Mom”. By the time Season 1 ends, Emma succeeds where Sister Krone and Mom failed many years earlier in leading a third of the children on a daring escape set in motion two months earlier.
  • Norman: One of the 3 main protagonists. Where Emma is couragous and Ray is cunning, Norman is calculating. When he figures out Ray is actually a Double Agent, rather than cut him out of their plan he turns him into their “Ace”. When Norman sees the large chasm on the other side of the wall, he return seemingly indicates he’s given up. Despite willingly going along with being “Shipped Out”, in the end Norman’s intel ensures their plan to escape happens successfully.
  • Ray: One of the 3 main protagonists and a Double Agent. It’s revealed to viewers in the season finale Ray is actually Mom Isabella’s biological son. When you think about it, that’s the only possible reason she would “reward” him with the items he used to build a jamming device. How their arrangement worked was in exchange for stalling his shipment, he would keep tabs on children planning to escape and report to her. His being her son was leverage in and of itself so…yeah.
  • Isabella: Known as “Mom”, she is the main Antagonist. The season finale reveals her backstory and confirms some of what Krone reveals about her own. About 20 years earlier, Isabella was planning to escape herself and saw the same thing Norman did from the top of the wall beyond the Home. That’s the real reason she wasn’t concerned about the kids actually escaping: The only known way out–the gate–is heavily guarded so…yeah. In exchange for giving up on escaping, she accepts a deal to become a Mom herself. She becomes pregnant (presumably via Artifician Insemenation) as part of her training to become a Mom. Seeing her son do what she could not…she couldn’t help but feel proud.
  • Krone: A “Sister” to Isabella for about half the first season. After Norman and Emma learn the truth, Isabella requests another adult to brought in as “Insurance”. That other adult is the scheming and mentally unstable Krone. When Isabella tells her some of the children learned the truth but is ignoring protocol, she seizes at the opportunity to cooperate with them for her own ends. Having figured out what she’s really up to, Isabella arranges for Krone to be removed–permanently. Before her exit, Krone leaves behind a “parting gift” for the kids to use for their escape.
  • Phil: One of the four year old kids. It’s revealed in the season finale Norman and Emma decided to tell all the kids aged 5 and up the truth and in turn, gained the manpower necessary to flawlessly execute their escape plan on short notice. This proved vital when Emma and Ray stopped talking during the two months after Norman’s departure. It allowed the preparations to continue while Mom kept tabs on the two of them. One more person was also involved: Four year old Phil. Assuming their escape plan succeeded, Phil and the other young kids would be safe for at least another two years. Despite his young age, Phil quickly grasps the situation and helps buy Emma and the others time to escape.

…Unsurprisingly, this is based on the Manga of the same name. There aren’t a lot of action scenes throughout but it will keep you on your toes from start to finish. This is also one Anime I would love to see a Live Action adaptation of, too.

It has a very Matrix-like feel to it if you need a comparison in terms of the plot: How would you feel if you found out everything you thought to be true was a lie and the reality was far worse? Would you choose freedom or would you choose the fantasy? The inspiration is way too obvious.

Season 2 is sure to be interesting and might have a time skip. I presume it will pick up where the first season left off.

A few things of note:

  • What will become of Isabella? The mysterious “Grandmother” didn’t seem bothered by the intel Krone gave her. I realized during the finale the current Grandmother was Isabella’s Mom when she was a child and that’s why she had Krone killed. If she felt the situation was beyond what Isabella could handle then she would’ve stepped in at that point. My guess is Grandmother had her son Ray placed in her care on purpose as “insurance”. Isabella likely realized this and used him to keep tabs on the other kids. The escape clearly changes things.
  • When Krone revealed the transmitting device implanted in all Mothers and Sisters, I knew Isabella probably knew Ray was lying to her when he told her Norman and Emma were planning to kill her. If they did actually try to kill her, they would’ve been harvested right away and with Ray being her actual son, she would’ve had a problem with that. That was also likely when she realized Krone was leaking information to Emma and Norman and so she had to be dealt with. She likely set things in motion for Norman to be Harvested at the same time.
  • Isabella broke Emma’s leg in front of Norman and the others on purpose to show all of them how far she was willing to go to keep them from escaping. With Norman’s departure, she wrongfully believed she had removed the biggest threat to her interests and focused on breaking Emma’s iron will. What she mistook as Ray being dispaired was actually his just biding his time. What she had no way of knowing by that point was almost half the kids were in on it.
  • What did Norman see? Isabella asked him to wait in another room past the gate but we’re intentionally not shown what made him gasp in surprise. He didn’t seem scared by whatever he was looking at either. My guess is maybe boys are offered a deal, too.

…Ray mentioned something called Infantile Amnesia. Basically, the older you get the harder it is to remember things from early in life. This is actually normal and very common. What isn’t normal is when it doesn’t happen. There are believed to be less than 200 people alive right now worldwide who can recall every single moment of the entire lives.

Ray and Norman both claim to have memories from before they were born and given their ages, that’s not entirely unbelievable. Ray could recall the melody Isabella used to hum when she was pregnant with him (and this is how she figured out he was her actual son). Case studies done on young children have proven they can recall memories from when they were 1 year old. Most experts caution against claims of adults who claim to remember from age 2 or earlier but don’t outright say such claims should be dismissed. After all, there are legit exceptions but I won’t digress further.

Anywho, there will be a Season 2. My guess is it will come in the next year or two. Stay tuned!

Vic Mignogna is beginning to pay the price for his arrogance

Image result for Vic Mignogna

…I do feel like at this point, it’s safe to say we may be seeing the beginning of the end of Vic Mignogna’s professional career as an actor and voice actor.

Anime News Network’s January 30 article (a new window will open) sums up the situation better than I ever could and I urge you to read it if you haven’t yet. As noted in the article, they like everyone else was hesitant to run the story simply because of the man involved: Legendary English voice actor Vic Mignogna. Above are pics of him with 8 of his most known roles. He voiced Broly in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie as well.

It’s pretty obvious from reading the article much care was taken by the author to keep their emotions in check and not appear to favor one side over the other. Clearly it was a story that they had been working on for years at least with the sources vetted for accuracy. While most of the allegations come from congoers and all of them come years after the fact, some have come from fellow voice actors as well. The allegations come from men as well as women.

Anime News Network provided an update here in which it was announced Vic has been removed from RWBY. The article also notes Vic’s appearances at 13 convention appearances were cancelled but he is still booked for five. Over the years, more and more conventions have been quietly blacklisting him because of the unsolicited inappropriate physical contact alleged by congoers backed by witnesses.

Speaking of conventions. I made a thread on Anime Boston’s forums last week requesting comment. Chris O’Donnell, who is Anime Boston’s Director of Public Relations responded shortly after I made the thread:

Mr. Mignonga has not been a Guest of Honor at Anime Boston since 2006. None of the reported allegations, as far as we are aware, occurred at Anime Boston. As such, we have no comment regarding these reports at this time.”

For reasons that should be obvious, he is not at liberty to say any more than that. Anime Boston does have actual experience in the area of invited Guests of Honor being the subject of allegations like this. A few years ago, longtime convention guest and voice actor Tom Wayland sexually assaulted a female convention staff member. The incident reportedly happened in the Sheraton Hotel, which is one of the venues used by the convention and it happened during the weekend-long event. He was a convention favorite alongside fellow longtime guest Greg Ayers and often brought his kids with him to the convention.

The New England Anime Society (NEAS), which is the parent company of Anime Boston banned him for life and the victim took him to court. That was the incident that made congoers realize they needed to be mindful of inappropriate conduct not just from other congoers or members of the public but people from the industry as well. NEAS set the standard for how all conventions should approach allegations involving people from the industry and public figures. You certainly don’t ignore or silence those who come forward.

Getting back to Vic’s indescretions. He did put out a public statement on January 21 which Anime News Network included in the first link from above and it is mostly in reaction to a Twitter thread from January 16. Here it is in full:

Most of it is the usual victim blaming and “They just want to ruin me” drivel you would come to expect from a public figure. In response to the allegations of inappropriate physical contact with Congoers and fellow industry members, he basically waves it off as “That’s how I interact with my family” and that’s the problem. You’re not meeting with family. You are meeting with members of the general public. Yes they’re fans of your work but that doesn’t give you a free pass to do whatever you want. He does say at the end he will change how he interacts from now on because of how much attention it’s been getting lately first and more likely his bottom line is being effected second. He let the fame go to his head in short.

This past weekend, Vic issued a public statement at a convention and was likely in reaction to the ANN article:

This should have come 10+ years ago.

For those who don’t know, he was approached about the allegations MANY TIMES by people in the industry. Fellow voice actress Monica Rial mentioned via Twitter she confronted him about it twice and complained to others higher up and she was silenced. Why was her voice, those involved and many others silenced or ignored?

Because it’s Vic Mignogna that’s why.

It’s clear in the video he finally got it and owns up to how he made so many people feel for almost 20 years. I don’t doubt the sincerity in the video at all and it’s clear he knows he hurt alot of people and let a lot of people down. I just hope he knows there is no one thing he could do that would make everything right.

I doubt everyone will forgive him but seeing as he did finally own it and apologized, his longtime fan club the Risembool Rangers needs to follow his lead and apologize for their part in helping to surpress the voices of those who spoke up over the years. Blind faith is no faith at all. No one is perfect and he has shown remorse for how he made others feel. His willingness do that shows me he is truly sorry. The thing those who insist on defending him no matter what need to prepare themselves for is more coming forward as well as civil lawsuits against him. Most likely he will settle as many of them out of court as possible. No one is perfect and when the people we look up to make mistakes, they should be held accountable. More so when they’re public figures.

It is important to know that there are no winners in a situation like this.

Vic’s reputation is permanently tarnished, alot of people who violated and many more people were silenced. Hopefully everyone involved can find peace. I don’t think this will destroy Vic professionally and more so now that he’s publicly apologized and owned it. I do think he should cancel his 5 remaining convention appearances for the year and take some time away from voice work though. He can make a comeback but first he should step away for a bit.

Attack on Titan set to end in 2019; The story so far

Image result for attack on titan

…It’s hard to believe it’s only been 5 years since Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin burst onto the scene and became a GLOBAL Phenomenon out the gate. Five years after it began, series creator Hajime Isayama (Also had a part in Death Note) announced over the summer during an interview the iconic series will end next year.

He allowed cameras to capture him drawing what will be the final panel of the series:

Image result for Attack on Titan final panel

The dialogue bubble says “You are free.” No context was given, presumably on purpose. The two leading theories from fans are it’s either Eren and his daughter or an unknown pair many years later.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Season 3 of the Anime is taking a 6-month hiatus and will resume in April 2019. The reason given is so that action scenes in the second half of the season can be properly done right but this may be the other reason: To give time for the Manga to wrap up. I have the Manga volumes up to 20 but plan to get the rest up to present once I have income again.

It is worth noting the Live Action movies did use plot elements from the Manga that hadn’t been approached yet. I’m specifically talking about the origins of the Titans and how the world was before the walled kingdom. The timeline including the events of the prequel Before the Fall series seems to be a few hundred years from the present. Researchers develop what we know as the Titan Serum, a special cocktail that will cause the person injected with it into a Titan. The first Titans unleashed on the world wiped out whole nations single-handedly and in fact, 80% of the world’s knowledge was lost shortly afterward.

Most of the world’s survivor erected the walled city and hid from the Titans inside. As we know, there WERE other humans who lived outside but due to the country’s strict control of information and knowledge, those who lived within were ignorant of the world beyond the walls. If anyone knew how to kill a Titan before, that knowledge was lost by the time the Before the Fall series begins. The series takes place 100 years before the start of AoT and the Omni-Directional Movement Gear (ODM Gear for short) is introduced for the first time. The first known successful Titan kill is recorded during that time as well.

Anyone who knows the series knows a Titan’s one weak point is the nape of the neck. Using paring blades with the ODM Gear, humans could now kill Titans by attacking thir weak point. The main series seems pretty straightforward but then a curveball is thrown when it is revealed Eren and other humans have the power to turn into Titans at will. Even worse, there are traitors among them. In ousting the traitors, the Survey Corps becomes aware of a closely guarded conspiracy going back many generations within the government and both Erin and Krista are key.

It’s revealed Krista is really Historia, the illegitimate daughter of the last remaining member of the royal bloodline. To protect her life, her father arranged for her to live under an assumed name but times have changed. In the end, Historia decides to turn on her father and decide her own life on her own terms. She backs the military-led coup de tat and inadvertently ends up cutting down her father after he turns into a gian Titan. This allows the military to present their new Queen to the people as a Hero.

It’s revealed along the way that Mikasa, Levi and he man who raised him named Kenny are all from the Ackerman Clan. Their clan is one of two who are immune to the power of the royal family’s bloodline. By the time AOT begins, the three named people are the only known members of the Ackerman Clan still alive. Mikasa’s mother was a member of the clan but she along with Mikasa’s father were both killed by bandits. She was taken in by the Jaeger family after the incident. Levi was raised and trained by Kenny, who kept their shared heritage a secret out of convenience. Yes, his full name is Levi Ackerman. He had no clue until Kenny told him in the end. With Kenny dead (cue South Park reference lol) that leaves Mikasa and Levi as the sole known members of the Ackerman Clan left alive. The rest were killed off or went into hiding (which Mikasa’s mother did).

I am not up to date on where the story currently is–not yet anyway–but I do plan to own all the volumes of the Manga. I have plenty of space on my bookshelves. I do feel that AOT will be remembered as one of the most engaging anime ever. Its global reach goes without saying. I do remember hearing a few years back that Marvel approached Isayama about doing an AOT crossover. On that note, the spinoff series Attack on Titan Junior High was done with his blessing (Unlike in the US, Fan Fiction is protected in Japan and more so when you have the original author’s permission).

I can say for sure Attack on Titan is on my top 10-all time Anime list. I’m sure it is for alot of folks. It’s certainly one to remember!

Ok so my gaming laptop died on Thanksgiving Day

…Yet I’m not entirely devastated. Why? Because I planned for it when I decided to buy my desktop PC the year before buying it. Losing my laptop means I can no longer play Diablo III or World of Warcraft. It also means I’ve lost my primary streaming device for Crunchyroll, WWE Network, Viki, Asian Crush and Xfinity. I decided back in 2013 that I would always have both a laptop and a desktop at the same time at home specifically for situations like this.

In a nutshell, I’ve only lost access to a handful of pictures from my digital camera since I hadn’t backed them up after I put them on my laptop earlier this year. Actually, I’ve lost nothing since the hard drive is fine. If I can get an enclosure or the right cable, I can remove the laptop’s hard drive and recover my files. No rush. In exchange for losing my laptop, I got a Blu Ray Player yesterday. Basically, I am taking steps to mitigate no longer having the use of my laptop.

Is it fixable? Nope, only the hard drive is salvagable and that can wait indefinitely. If anyone is interested in helping me get a new laptop, you can donate money through PayPal. If you’re open to ordering a laptop and having it shipped to me, feel free to let me know also.

That aside, I obviously still have my desktop. Eh…for now anyway. The thing’s a toaster but it’s better than nothing. Man, do I not miss the 2000s when I had to struggle to just turn on my old laptop. I stopped using it for resource-demanding games and it’s not powerful enough to run Guild Wars 2, Civilization V, Destiny 2, World of Warcraft or Diablo III (all of which I have). The CD drive in my dekstop stopped working years ago, too so it’s not good for serious gaming overall. So, I would eventually want to get a more powerful desktop in the future too.

…That said, I have more pressing priorities than buying two new computers. Namely getting stable income first, my own apartment second and going back to college third. This is also why I haven’t been doing alot of blogging for much of the year. Fortunately, it doesn’t cost me anything to keep this blog online.

Thanks, WordPress!

Dragon Ball Super: Broly revisits the shared history of Four Iconic Characters

I’m gonna preface this with major spoilers for the end of Dragon Ball Super as well as the Resurrection F Saga so if you haven’t seen the series finale, you’ve been warned.

For those who haven’t seen the Resurection F Arc or the movie of the same name, Frieza is wished back to life by Shenron. Frieza is originally killed by Future Trunks at the start of Dragonball Z’s Androids Saga. Frieza trains in preparation for his rematch with Goku and Vegeta. Frieza admits to having never trained ever in his life but will make an exception for the sake of revenge. He gains a new Golden form similar to Super Saiyan but is ultimately killed again, this time by Goku.

Fast Forward to the Tournament of Power. Universe 7’s team is forced to find a last-minute replacement for their team. With the stakes so high, Goku travels to the netherworld to recruit Frieza. The Warlord reluctantly agrees just so he can leave Earth’s hell. In the Tournament of Power’s final moments, Frieza and Goku sacrifice themselves to help 17 become the last fighter standing. As a reward for helping Universe 7 win the Tournament of Power, Frieza is ressurrected again. The last we see of him, the Warlord reforming his army somewhere.

…Now, let’s get to the interesting shared history Frieza has with both Planet Vegeta and Beerus. Beerus revealed when he’s first introduced in the God of Destruction Saga while talking to Whis he was the one who told Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta. It is worth noting Frieza is arguably the second most powerful mortal being in the universe after Majin Buu and this was before he fought Goku for the first time. In the Tournament of Power, it was revealed Universe 11’s Jiren and Top were both more powerful than their universe’s God of Destruction.

A theory I have is Frieza may have been considered as a candidate as a God of Destruction. It’s already been clearly established Frieza has the power to destroy planets without much effort with his Death Ball technique. The technique destroys a planet’s core completely, triggering its immediate destruction. Namek didn’t explode right away because it wasn’t a clean break. Based on the line in the above picture, it’s obvious Frieza has at least heard about Beerus in detail before the events of Resurrection F from his father King Cold. Beerus knows he’s a loose cannon but clearly respects his power. More so given he resurrected Frieza for his role in securing victory for Universe 7 at the Tournament of Power.

Goku, Vegeta and Broly have a shared history most already know: Goku and Broly were born on the same day while Vegeta is the son of King Vegeta, who orders Broly be executed in the original movie. In the new canon storyline, King Vegeta orders Broly be banished to a faraway planet. Shortly after that, Planet Vegeta is destroyed by Frieza.

In Dragonball Z, Vegeta states He and Vegeta are the only pureblooded Saiyans left in the universe. With Broly now being canon, this will be slightly retconned to “Everyone who was on Planet Vegeta died and only those who were away at the time survived”. We do know that Goku’s birth parents–Bardock and Gine–appear in the second trailer along with King Vegeta and Broly’s father Paragus. Goku’s brother Raditz was obviously offworld along with Nappa and Vegeta, who also survived their homeworld’s destruction. I do see this as opening the door to introducing more Saiyans in Universe 7 later on. More so given the Female Super Saiyan is officially canon as of Dragonball Super (Kale from Universe 6).

…Yeah, clearly the groundwork is being laid to introduce more canon Saiyans in Universe 7. Could be interesting and more so since we’ve already the “Evil Saiyans” storyline at the beginning of Dragonball Z. We have also seen the “Evil Saiyan comes full circle” storyline in Vegeta as well so…yeah. We will have to wait and see how things unfold!

Sakura Haruno

Related image

Anyone who’s seen Naruto and/or Naruto Shippuden knows who Sakura is so I’ll leave out her exploits as a kid and teenager. Shortly after the end of The Fourth Great Ninja War, Team 7 team mates Sakura and Sasuke Uchiha made the Ship official and got married. shortly after that, Sarada came along. Like Naruto, Sai and Kakashi, Sakura transitioned to civilian life as a Ninja Medic and being Sarada’s mother.

Having never met her father and only knowing him from pictures and stories about him, Sarada started to doubt Sasuke was her real mother. She decided to ask Naruto about it but then they get caught up up a battle with one of Orochimaru’s failed experiments from the past. Along the way she meets her father and activates the Sharingan for the first time. After the danger is dealt with, Sasuke confirms for his daughter that Sakura is her mother…as well as his wife.

By the time Boruto Next Generations begins, much time has passed. Everyone has grown up and almost everyone is a parent now. Since the focus is on Boruto and Sarada’s generation, the previous generation don’t appear as much outside supporting the newer ones.  Sakura is no exception. Her daughter has obviously inherited her father’s Sharingan. She has also inherited the superhuman strength of mother.

Chi-Chi

Chi-Chi is probably the…how should I put this…oldest person on the list. She is Goku’s wife but she is also the mother of Gohan and Goten as well as the grandmother of Gohan’s daughter Pan.

She is first introduced as a child in Dragonball. She is the only daughter of the fearsome Ox King. Ox Mountain is on fire and the only way it can be extinguished is with the Kamehameha. Goku meets Master Roshi, who teaches him the technique. After Goku uses the Kamehameha to put out the fire on Ox Mountain, Chi-Chi falls in love with him. Chi-Chi doesn’t appear again until the end of the Dragonball series as a young adult. She faces Goku in the World Martial Arts Tournament. The two marry shortly afterward and their son Gohan is born before the start of Dragonball Z.

After the birth of Gohan, Chi-Chi becomes a doting wife to Goku as well as as a doting mother to Gohan and later Goten as well. Gohan was trained by Piccolo but Goten was personally trained by Chi-Chi. Speaking of. Goten was born offscreen shortly after the end of the Cell Saga. It’s commonly believed Chi-Chi discovered she was pregnant shortly after the end of the Cell Saga. Goten is seven years old when he is introduced in the Great Saiyaman Saga and Trunks is a year older than him. So Chi-Chi was pregnant with him at the end of or just after the Cell Saga.

In Dragonball Super, Chi-Chi plays a recurring role as Goku’s wife and grandmother of Pan. Having saved the universe from Majin Buu, Chi-Chi FINALLY gets Goku to get a job…as a farmer! Having no personal need for it, Goku gives Chi-Chi the briefcase containing 100 Million Zenni he receives from Mr. Satan/Hercule to Chi-Chi as a gift…and a bribe to go train under Whis. Chi-Chi is present along with the others during the tournament between Universes 6 and 7, comforting Goku when he is eliminated early on.

Nagisa Furukawa/Okazaki

Anyone who’s seen Clannad or played the VN knows who Nagisa is. Plus, you should know if you’ve been reading my blog for at least the last three years. So, this will be short. For those who recently started reading my blog, she is the lead female protagonist in the Anime and the canon pairing for Tomoya Okazaki, the lead male protagonist. In the After Story Arc, she becomes pregnant with their daughter Ushio.

In the Alternate Storyline, Nagisa dies giving birth to Ushio. Get your tissues ready because here it is (English Dub):

At the end of the Alternate Timeline in the Anime, this happens instead (English Sub):

To get this ending in the VN, you must collect all of the orbs of Light. You will get a notification once this condition has been satisfied. Plus the Title Screen will be flashing to show you it’s time to see to True Ending ^_^

Hana (Wolf Children)

Wolf Children, which was created by Mamoru Hosoda is a tribute to single mothers worldwide. Hosoda himself was raised by a single mother and used his own life experiences as inspiration for this moving story. The obvious twist for Hana is her kids can turn into wolves. After the family moves out of the city and into the suburbs, Yuki and Ame start to drift apart and Hana must come to terms with her children going in different directions and pursuing two different worlds. Yuki decides to live as a human while Ame, who has trouble fitting in at school decides to live as a wolf. In the end, Hana accepts the choices of her children and especially Ame’s.

Trisha Elric

Another person on this list everyone here has at least heard of. After all, her death is what kicked off Ed and Al’s Excellent Adventure.

It is interesting to note Trisha first met Hoenheim when she was a child. Hoenheim kept returning to Risembool every few years until she was old enough to marry. It’s likely he didn’t tell her much about his past but they had Ed and Al. A few years later, he left and never returned. A disease that spread across the region claimed her life. Ed and Al attempted Human Transmutation in an effort to bring her back but of course, their efforts failed with disasterous results. Ed would realize much later the obvious truth: It’s impossible to bring the dead back to life.

Izayoi

She is the second of three mothers on this list who had a child born of two different worlds. In her case, she is the mother of Inuyasha. Izayoi is dead by the time the story begins but we learn about her later in the story.

She is the Lady of a distinguished clan though it appears she was not married when she meets Inutaisho (Inuyasha and Sesshomaru’s father). We know from the events of the movie Swords of an Honorable Ruler that her relationship with a demon kept her at odds with the captain of the guard, who was smitten with her. he was so angry when it was discovered she became pregnant by a demon that he set the castle on fire and then impaled her with a spear shortly after she gave birth to Inuyasha. Inutaisho used Tenseiga to bring her back to life and gave her the Fire Rat Robe (now worn by Inuyasha), leading her to safely before he was consumed by the flames.

We know from Inuyasha’s early memories that she raised him in a nearby village after that until she died (It’s implied she died of illness) Having never known his father, Inuyasha was very close to his mother. Sesshomaru used this knowledge to set a trap for him early in the series.

Delia Ketchum

Related image

Everyone knows who she is. So we’ll leave it at that.

Delia Ketchum was a large part of the third Pokemon movie Spell of the Unown in which she is kidnapped by the legendary Pokemon Entei. Her appearances are few for obvious reasons but she does her best to encourage her son. While technically not a trainer herself, she does have a Pokemon partner in Mr. Mime.

One of the oldest unsolved mysteries is the answer to this question: Who is Ash’s father? All that’s known is he is or was likely a trainer.

Hild (Ah! My Goddess!)

Image result for Ah My Goddess Hild

And here we have the third Mother who broke a taboo and had a mixed race child. In her case, Hild is the mother of the Goddess Urd.

The Anime doesn’t get into this but once upon a time, Hild and The Almighty One were lovers. We also know they used the Gate of Destiny used to weight the strength of the bond between lovers from two worlds, which was a major plot device in The Movie. The two were forced apart but Hild beat the system to see The Almighty One for what would be final time. Urd was conveived from that final meeting and born after the Doublet System was put in place to end the war beween Gods and Demons. While Hild obviously still has feelings for The Almighty One, when asked by Belldandy she plainly states because she tricked the system once, trying a second time would cost her life.

Aside from being Urd’s Mother she is the Daimachaiko, or Ruler of Demonkind. Her power is equal to The Almighty One’s, hence all the jewelry you see in the video to seal most of her true power. Had she arrived at full power, probably most of the world would have been wiped out! After she returns to Nifelhiem (referredto as The Demon Realm in the Anime), she splits off a child version of herself to mess with Keiichi and the Goddesses for  a while. In the Manga, there is coup in Nifelheim and her main body is sealed by the Userper. Hild turns to Keiichi and the Goddesses for help, ultimately regaining her full power again.

…Ok that’s ir for this year. Most of you have probably seen AnimeKat’s post but if you haven’t, check it out ^_^

Next year, I’ll see about doing mothers and fathers in Video Games I’ve played.
